THE PACIFIC VIEW HOTEL
Time: 4:20 p.m.
42 hours remaining
After spending several hours disassembling and reassembling her vehicle, AutoDoc had found the tiny little transmitter that Cortez had been using to track her. A device smaller than her little toenail and plastered just under the lip of Prowler’s frame. Now that it was gone, she could relax a little. Anyone wanting to follow her would have to do it the old fashioned way. They’d have to physically follow her car. And she wished them good luck with that. On the streets, there just wasn’t much that could keep up with an 800 horsepower Prowler running full-throttle.
Lucy paused after entering the hotel to shake the rain from her coat. Then, she scanned the room as she ran her fingers through her wet hair, trying to make herself feel a little more presentable.
The atrium of the Pacific View Hotel was an impressive sight, Lucy thought. She supposed she probably had the same thought every time she’d been here. However many times that was. The lobby was circular, wide, and two-stories high. The floor was white marble and furnished with numerous sofa sectionals arranged in circles and accented by plants. The walls were all a cherry-colored marble, as were the pillars that stretched up to the glass ceiling. And at the far end of the room, just before the elevators, was the glass reception desk with display screens sitting atop.
That was her first destination.
Between the front door and the reception desk were small groups of men and women either wearing raincoats or with them casually draped nearby. Most were covered in tattoos, all sporting weapons, and with every imaginable hair color and style.
What is this? A clown convention?
As the room narrowed toward the reception desk, Lucy passed a large group of thugs all chatting and laughing just outside the restrooms. A couple of which eyed her as she walked past, which she simply ignored. As long as they remained sitting on their asses, she didn’t need to worry about them.
Markus had told Lucy that this was a safe house for all criminals. And that couldn’t have happened unless both he and Cortez had agreed to the rules here. Make no trouble, get not trouble, Markus had said. And as that was the law of the land here, anyone crossing that boundary would surely be assassinated shortly thereafter. Lucy didn’t doubt that for a second.
That being a fact, and with Scalpel being a resident of this hotel, it made Lucy’s mission exponentially more difficult. If she had any chance to complete her assignment, she’d have to figure out how to talk the doctor into leaving this place. And she wouldn’t have any idea how to accomplish that until she’d met him.
Behind the counter was a brown-eyed, blonde in her late-twenties or early thirties. As the desk was clear glass, Lucy had a good view of her appearance. The woman was very conservative looking. She wore a clean white blouse with a navy-blue skirt, which stopped just above her knees.
